Erdogan Says Turkey Stands with Nigeria Against Terrorism

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, highlighting Ankara’s readiness to expand collaboration in military training and intelligence sharing.

Speaking alongside Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a joint press conference in Ankara, Erdogan praised Nigeria’s firm steps under Tinubu’s leadership and emphasized that Türkiye stands with the Nigerian people in addressing security threats.

He noted that the two leaders reviewed “opportunities for closer cooperation” in the defense sector. Nigerian officials also met with Türkiye’s top defense industry firms during the visit, with Erdogan expressing confidence in the positive outcomes of those discussions.

“We are ready to share Türkiye’s significant experience in counterterrorism,” Erdogan said, stressing that terrorist groups, especially in Africa’s Sahel region, continue to threaten the continent’s stability.

The president also reiterated the countries’ goal of achieving a $5 billion trade volume, discussing concrete steps to strengthen bilateral economic relations and welcoming the creation of the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) to support these efforts.

Erdogan highlighted that Tinubu’s visit, accompanied by numerous ministers and senior officials, demonstrated Nigeria’s strong political will to deepen economic cooperation.

“Türkiye supports investments in Nigeria and welcomes cooperation between Turkish Petroleum Corporation, BOTAS, and Nigerian energy firms,” he said, underscoring Nigeria’s potential as Africa’s largest oil and gas producer.
