New Jersey Historic Trust Announces Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Grant Award Recommendations
More Than $15 Million in Awards Recommended for Preservation Planning, Heritage Tourism, and Capital Projects
TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Historic Trust (NJHT), an affiliate of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA), today approved a total of $15,227,208 in grant recommendations from the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund to save and promote historic sites throughout the state. Seventy-seven municipal, county, and regional planning, heritage tourism, and capital projects are included in this year’s list of recommendations. Among the recommendations is $2,250,000 for the next phase of funding for three previously awarded multi-year projects.
"New Jersey's historic sites tell the story of who we are, from the Revolution to the present day," said DCA Commissioner Jacquelyn A. Suárez. "These grants help communities repair buildings, plan for their future, and welcome more visitors through their doors. When we invest in these places, we protect our history and strengthen the towns that care for it. We're proud to support the Historic Trust and the local partners who keep this work going."
Of the 74 new grant award recommendations, 33 will help fund a variety of preservation planning projects such as condition assessments, preservation plans, archaeological investigations, and construction documents; three will help fund intensive-level architectural surveys, a historic preservation element for a master plan and a county-wide preservation plan for historic cemeteries; two will help fund heritage tourism initiatives to improve the visitor experience at historic sites; and 36 will fund capital preservation projects on sites listed in the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. All grants awarded are to nonprofit organizations or entities of municipal, county and state governments and require a match from the recipient.
“It is wonderful to see so many varied projects representing all parts of New Jersey included in this year’s list of grant awards,” said NJHT Executive Director Glenn Ceponis. “As we reflect on recent celebrations associated with America’s 250th anniversary, it is rewarding to know that because of preservation projects funded this year and in years past by the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund, New Jerseyans will have the opportunity to continue celebrating their heritage for years to come.”
The grant recommendations, approved by the New Jersey Historic Trust Board, will be presented to the Garden State Preservation Trust at its next meeting. Following that approval, legislation will be introduced to appropriate the recommended awards using constitutionally dedicated Corporate Business Tax revenue from the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund. Funds will be released upon the Governor's approval of the legislation.
Funding for the current grant round is dedicated from a voter-approved constitutional amendment that created the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund. The Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund continues the work of the Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund and voter-supported referendums that have committed over $200 million to more than 1,000 historic preservation projects since 1990. All funded sites are listed or certified eligible in the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places, either individually or within designated historic districts.
